The human protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica can live in the intestine for months or years without generating any symptoms host. For unknown reasons, amoebae suddenly destroy intestinal mucosa and become invasive. This lead to amoebic colitis extraintestinal amoebiasis whereby spread other organs via blood vessels, most commonly liver where abscesses develop. nuttalli is closest genetic relative of E. found wild macaques. Another close dispar , which asyptomatically infects intestine. Although all three species are closely related, only able penetrate their host’s epithelium. Lineage-specific genes gene families may hold key understanding differences virulence among species. Here we discuss those that have relatives one neither its sister species, with particular focus on peptidase, AIG, Ariel, BspA families.
